Newspass, Is Google Murdoch’s best friend?
Murdoch dreamed of it? Google has just made it. In its June 17 edition, the website of the respected Italian newspaper La Repubblica said the giant of Mountain View will launch Newspass, a one-click content payment system, by the end of the year.
According to the Italian daily, Newspass is already in its testing phase and Google is currently proposing publishers to join it into an experimental phase.
Newspass would be connected to Google’s payment platform Checkout. The articles behind a paywall, already listed by the search engine, would appear into Google’s search results. The user will then be able to buy the article by clicking there.
La Repubblica did not give details on the sales percentages provided by Google.
But the Italian journalist media expert, Vittorio Zambardino, already described the Google project as more visionary than Apple just while, with the release of the iPad, all eyes are turned towards Cupertino.
According to Zambardino, the choice made by Google with Newspass — a system independent from either the software or the hardware readers are using — is the one of an “open market based on the ecosystem”. For Zambardino, Google has realized that “ownership of the choice of reading has shifted from editors to readers. With Newspass, Google confirms it have understood this change of era”.
We will keep you informed about the reaction of Google to these revelations.
